House Porn – Making Midcentury Modern

With 100 ways to incorporate Midcentury Modern Design and Decorating into your home, this book is particularly relevant as many contemporary interiors have decidedly veered toward the Scandinavian – and then American – look of the mid 1940’s to the late 1960’s, with no signs of slowing.

If you are interested in a Midcentury Modern aesthetic and need a place to begin, this will quickly give you simple and easy ideas. Think grass cloth wallcoverings and melamine dishware! It’s basically a how to manual with a little history behind the movement. Rooted in organic design, Midcentury Modern Designers sought out new technologies and materials. Interior Designer, Christopher Kennedy’s (no relation to the Kennedy Family) aim is to combine a Midcentury vibe with forward thinking ideas – pleasing even Eero Saarinen if he were alive, without feeling like you live on the set of Mad Men!

Including the little things that make your house a home (I loathe that expression, btw) the author (who calls it life behind the style – much better) makes a strong case for common – yet not always adopted – ideas such as making your bed each day, setting the table, putting down the smart phone, embracing minimalism and optimism – but all done in a very cool Scandinavian way.

A 5 star read, Making Midcentury Modern is written with a really fresh and fun style and includes personal stories. It makes me want to sit in a Womb Chair admiring the author’s collection of swizzle sticks! Can I meet you Christopher Kennedy?

I borrowed this book from my local library where I was employed for 12 years before I “quit my sweet ass gov job to go to art school”. Anyway – I love my library and encourage you to check out your local branch because here’s the thing – you never know what kind of design book you’ll find (like this one) providing new concepts for those who are so inclined. There’s nothing like seeing interiors in print, btw.

Anyone have a favourite design or decorating book? Any recommendations?

Off I go to stalk all things Christopher Kennedy. Do you think he has a fancy toilet like Beyoncé’s? I bet not. It’s probably very clean lined. If I could only find a way to ask him.

Yours in Décor,

Emily
